Your products used to be so simple and natural. Why are they starting to contain more synthetic ingredients?
SheaMoisture continues to make the same natural products it always have, that feature botanically-derived ingredients like vegetable butters, plant extracts, and of course organic shea butter. The only thing that has changed is that as our small family-owned company has grown into a larger family, we have changed our labels to be compliant with global regulations on how we list our ingredients. In order for all companies around the world to be consistent, we are required to use a specific set of names for things called the INCI list: the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. Because this list is used around the world in many languages, the words can be a little unfamiliar and technical-sounding. So for example, our sugar beet cleanser is now listed as decyl glucoside. Even something as simple as Neem Oil, a favorite scalp treatment, becomes Melia Azadirachta Seed Oil. Yes, the label now sounds different and a lot more like chemicals, but these are the same safe natural ingredients we have always used, just with different names. The arrangement of the ingredients is also affected by the compliance so while the list may be rearranged slightly, the product will still provide the same benefits as before.
Thank you again for reaching out to us and showing concern over these changes. We appreciate your feedback and if you have any other questions, please let us know.
